Coaching for Health and Spirit

Our time here is spent on a journey toward wholeness. Along the way we collect beliefs and emotions that become our "truth." When we are young, with no experience in life, our "truth" has the limitation of inexperience. As we gain experience it becomes helpful to revisit our "truth" and reexamine it based on our growing wisdom. We rarely do that. When our "truth" is at odds with our contract for this life and with who we really are, we sometimes get sick.

As a coach, I will help you see yourself anew. Together we will address the unique and special situation you find yourslef in. As a partner in your journey back to health I will offer you my support, wisdom and spiritual understanding. You do not need to be alone.

My Journey to Becoming a Minister

My father was constantly searching for a church. As a result I attended many churches n my area of many different denominations. I can remember asking the various ministers religious questions and realizing that they didn’t know the answers. At about eight I was teaching Sunday school. I brought to the class an exercise in remembering a deck of cards as a tool to remember the bible. I was thrilled that something so simple could be used for such a spiritual purpose. The Elders of the church heard about it and promptly dismissed me and prevented me from teaching again. Another lesson is the lack of spiritual understanding of my “elders.”

I eagerly attended Summer Sunday School for years. I too searched in many denominations for a spiritual home. I tried the various Protestant denominations and even took Catholic catechism. My questions always seemed confrontive to the various authorities. I kept my love for Jesus, but I discarded the Christian religion as I found it practiced by most people I knew as not inline with my understanding of Jesus.

I’ve always had an interest in psychology. When I started college my plan was to become psychiatrist. At the time you needed to become a doctor in order to be a psychiatrist, so I started pre-med. At the tender age of 18 I calculated my age when I’d finally be able to practice my profession and concluded that 30 was too far away. My second choice was a psychologist, but at the time all they did was give tests and that wasn’t what I wanted to do. It would be many years before I became acquainted with Jung. Had I known about him earlier I might have become a Jungian psychologist. Abraham Maslow was an early hero and his Toward a Psychology of Being was a seminal influence. My cultural assessments I see as an extension of Maslow’s work.

In the 70s I was fortunate enough to meet a Guru, Muktananda. I spent over 30 years as a student of Kashmir Slavism. This became my spiritual home. Here I found not only answers, but also practices to help me develop and grow. I had a strong desire to become a monk in this tradition, but I had children at the time, so I did not follow that inclination.

I spent over fifteen years exploring human behavior in groups as a practioner of organizational development and transformation.. I learned how structure impacts people’s emotions, beliefs, and behavior. I learned how to make groups work and I learned the importance of leadership. I also began to see how leadership was changing.

The world is changing. I really saw just how much as I started to reorganize the books on my shelves. I have over a thousand books on various subjects. It used to be an easy, though lengthy process to do this. This time it was much harder as the categories seemed to flow into each other. Spirituality is in everything! I have books on spirituality in business, in the new sciences, in self-development and spirituality is n all of them. The internet is another place where the shift in consciousness is apparent. Web 2.0 is all about participation – so are the new forms of organizations social entrepreneurs are creating. As the world is changing so leadership has become a different animal.

As I pondered my role in all of this a desire to speak and work from a more clearly spiritual place arose. I’ve been searching for just how that might happen what it might look like for several years. I found the Unitarian Universalist church and that has become a home for me in many ways. My financial obligations from my almost completed doctorate program and the realization of my mortality achieved by my cancer victory have all informed my decision to become a Spiritual Humanist minister. In doing so I have created a space of some freedom, so I can share and practice my spiritual understanding in my own way without ruffling the feathers of any of those in my other spiritual homes. My understanding of “God” does not neatly fit into any of the disciplines, not does my understanding of humanity and enlightenment. We are truly in a New Age and I believe that that requires new approaches. To enter into and accept my role in humanities growth I feel that the choice of being a Spiritual Humanist Minister gives me permission and a platform to do just that! I am very excited about this aspect of my life and I look forward to exploring it and in watching it blossom.

About My Ordination

My Ordination is more about certifying my willingness to answer me call than about certifying my capability. That job is YOURS. We have created a social structure where we off-load our responsibility for validating an “experts” competence through licensing and certification processes. Where competence requires knowledge of chemical and structural loads and perhaps laws, then such certificates have value. In the field of spirituality, however there is NO authority but yourself that determine the “truth” or helpfulness of someone’s words. YOU are the sole authority of the truthfulness or usefulness of a spiritual practice or understanding at that point in time for your spiritual path. Truth is NOT determined by what we say. It exists and we experience it if our beliefs do not hide it from us. Your work is to open your mind and engage with me as we discover the truth together. My ordination simply signifies that I am ready to accept my responsibility in that conversation.
